Bike-Bob's History

My sister was in the backyard and out of sight - why not, I asked myself? I slipped my foot over the low bar and sneaked away on her bike. I rode a bike for the first time; as I glided downhill, I knew I was hooked for life. Absolute freedom! I was seven years old and in the next 50+ years, nothing has changed!

I enjoy promoting the safe, everyday use of the bicycle. While I have a car, most years I put more ks on my bikes than on my car. I use my bike to go to meetings, shop, visit, for exercise, on club rides (social) as well as on my endless vacations, now that I am retired.

Several years ago CAN-BIKE was introduced to us in Truro. I missed out as was leading a bike tour at the time. I had to wait 2 years to find a CAN-BIKE instructor to take a CAN-BIKE 11 course, and almost another 3 years to take the CAN-BIKE National Instructors course, as we had no active National Examiners in the Maritimes until just recently. I am thrilled to be part of the process and have a strong desire to move safe cycling forward in this area. I know all of the instructors personally; none of us are motivated by money as we offer the courses receiving payment of minimum wage as we do not want excessive costs to be a barrier to receiving these worthwhile courses.

Background

  • I love to bike, I average 10,000 to 12,000ks+ a year, over 100,000ks during the past 12 years alone. I bike all year round, but pick my spots by trying to avoid dangerous situations
  • I successfully completed CAN-BIKE 11, a prerequisite for the National Instructors CAN-BIKE course that I have also completed.
  • I have served on the Board of Directors of Bicycle NS for the past 4 years as Vice President of Transportation, Touring and Trails.
  • I was a founding Director& Treasurer of the Halifax Cycling Coalition.
  • I have been involved with, as well as hosted past Nova Scotia Bicycle Summits.
  • I assisted with the formation of the Nova Scotia Bikeways Coalition.
  • I served on the committees of HRM Bike Week as well as "Craig's Cause"
  • I was a long time member and Past President, VP / Tour Planner of Velo Halifax Bicycle Club.
  • I am the Founder and President of the Nova Scotia Ramblers Bicycle Club, one of the largest bike clubs in Eastern Canada.
  • I led my first bicycle tour over 50 years ago and estimate I have led in excess of 1,000 tour (days) since.
  • I have given dozens of bicycle clinics, workshops and lectures over the years, as well as attended many gathering to promote the safe use of the bicycle.
  • When I am on my bike, I am 12 years old (again)
